Fiji Airways has officially touched down on the Gold Coast, with Australian Aviation reporting that flight FJ981 arrived at Coolangatta shortly after noon on Thursday. According to the report, the service was operated by Boeing 737 MAX 8 DQ-FAH, before departing back to Nadi as FJ980 at about 1:45pm.
The route is set to run on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, adding more than 53,000 seats a year into the market. The airport access angle is the interesting bit here.
Another international airline using the Gold Coast gives South East Queensland and northern NSW travellers one more option outside the main Brisbane gateway. For an airport like Coolangatta, that matters because the catchment is spread across a busy tourism and residential corridor, not just one city centre.
It is also a useful reminder that international connectivity is not only a capital-city story. A three-times-weekly narrowbody service may sound modest beside the big hub schedules, but it can still shift how an airport is viewed for border processing, ground handling, onward transport and future network planning.
For the Gold Coast, the Fiji link adds another layer to the airport’s role as a leisure and regional access point. For Fiji Airways, it gives the airline a direct presence in a market where holiday travel and visiting-friends-and-relatives demand can be strong, without relying solely on connections through larger Australian airports.
