Australian Aviation reports that Air New Zealand is preparing to launch seasonal Perth–Christchurch flights, putting it up against Jetstar on the trans-Tasman city pair. The airline is expected to operate the route three times per week from 30 November 2026 through to 7 May 2027.
According to the report, the flights will use newly retrofitted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and add up to 37,000 seats across the season. It is a neat access story for Western Australia as much as it is an airline competition story.
A direct Perth–Christchurch option gives travellers a way to reach New Zealand’s South Island without routing through the east coast of Australia or via Auckland, which can matter during the busy summer and holiday period. The aircraft angle is also worth noting.
Australian Aviation links the move to more Air New Zealand 787s returning from maintenance, alongside new aircraft deliveries. Long-haul aircraft availability has been a constraint across parts of the market, so extra widebody capacity can quickly change what seasonal international routes are possible.
